Many firms might be tempted to cut corners on products to stay afloat in a sinking economy, but not Aspen Equipment Co. “Our theory has never been to be the cheapest guys out there,” President Steve Sill says.

This strategy has paid off for the firm, whose clients are willing to pay a little extra for its higher level of quality and service. “Our customers recognize that [we] aren’t interested in [doing things cheaply],” he says.

Since its inception in 1986, JBS Log­istics has become known as one of the most reliable mid-sized over-the-road transportation, warehouse and distribution companies in the nation. Now, with the addition of the airfreight services of affiliated company KFS Air Freight, JBS Logistics is ready to provide even more services to clients nationwide and overseas. Regardless of the work it does, President Alec Gizzi explains, JBS intends to stay true to the formula and attributes that have made it what it is today.

Canada’s Alberta province privatized liquor retailing in 1993. Until then, there were only 204 government-owned and -operated liquor stores in Alberta. Since then, however, the amount of licensed retail outlets in the province has grown to more than 1,100. Additionally, the number of liquor products available for purchase in the province have gone from 3,500 before privatization to now more than 15,400. Connect Logistics Services is an important part of how retailers receive their supply.

Missouri-based Kuecker Logistics Group’s (KLG) move to a new headquarters at the end of 2008 benefits not only the company, but customers, as well. “We have a new technology center,” Vice President of Sales Jim Kuecker says.

“We do debugging for customers in our technology center, which in turn makes implementation to go a lot smoother. It also allows us to train our employees and customers before we get to the site.”

The Dante B. Fascell Port of Miami-Dade – or Port of Miami – has several distinctions. Aside from being one of the busiest ports in the nation, it is

the “Cargo Gateway of the Americas” and the world’s largest cruise ship port. It is one of very few ports in the world to cater to both cruise ships and containerized cargo.

After an absence of more than 10 years, one of North America’s largest couriers is rapidly regaining its foothold in the U.S. market. Purolator Courier Ltd. is the largest courier in Canada, and the company has been achieving double-digit growth in the United States since getting back into the market 10 years ago, and is on-pace to grow by 30 percent in the U.S. market in 2008, according to CEO Robert Johnson. “In terms of size, you can put any two of our competitors [in Canada] together and we’re still bigger than the combined entity,” he says.

Jim Szmyrko got his start in the trucking industry as a “swamper” – a trucker’s assistant – in Alberta, Canada, at the age of 15. From that humble beginning, Szmyrko now owns and operates Allnite Trucking Ltd., which provides heavy oilfield services including moving, transferring and relocating drilling rigs.
